The challenging paradox:

Maximizing Subscriber visible Spectrum Without Compromise

In modern mobile networks the upper part of the main antenna lobe provides most of the useful coverage in the cell. As a paradox, the upper part of the main antenna lobe also constitutes the largest interference in the network, as the signal does not stop at the cell border but continues into neighbouring sites with high gain and low path loss. This results in decreased CINR and effectively decreased spectrum efficiency.

The Fact

For broad band antennas e.g. 1695-2690 MHz, the size of the main lobe decreases with increasing frequency. Hence the coverage and interference behavior for the lower part of the spectrum will be vastly different compared to the upper part.

Multiband radios transmit dual or triple band signals without allowing traditional antennas to use the optimal tilt for each transmitted frequency band. The effect is a suboptimized network where lower midband frequencies will suffer larger interference and higher frequency bands will not cover as far in the cell as desired.

The Solution:

VERA – Designed for the Demands of Today and Tomorrow

Cellmax antennas do not only provide the highest antenna efficiency in the market but now we can also allow Mobile operators, through VERA, to place the energy where it is mostly needed in the cell. VERA optimizes both coverage and interference, regardless of which frequency bands are transmitted by the multiband radio.

VERA is more than just a feature; it’s a strategic investment in network performance, customer satisfaction, and long-term efficiency.

The Benefit

At an optimal 1800MHz setting, VERA delivers over 5dB gain at the cell edge for 2600MHz. Combined with our exceptional gain advantage over other antennas, this innovation will redefine how networks are designed in the future. The key benefits include:

1. Enhanced Spectrum Reach – Expands subscribers’ access to the spectrum within the cell, maximising capacity and throughput.

2. Improved User Satisfaction – Users transitioning from congested lower midband frequencies to the highest midband frequencies can achieve up to 2x higher throughput rates.

3. Reduced Need for In-fill Sites – Fewer sites are required to maintain robust coverage and capacity.

4. Optimized MIMO 4x4 Investments – Superior alignment between antenna ports ensures the highest possible MIMO gain.

5. Increased Utilization of High-frequency Bands – Enables 35% more users on the highest frequency bands, maximizing your spectrum investment.

Introduction of new antenna KPI

As part of the VERA launch, Cellmax introduces a new antenna KPI. The intent is to visualize for customers how the power is expected to vary on the cell edge over frequency and ports for different antenna models. The “3dB Pattern Discrepancy” shows how many dB the pattern varies between ports and over the frequency band at the desired cell edge.

A world leading supplier shows an alarming 22dB variation over ports and frequency on the cell edge. This highlights the importance of not just radiating power but ensuring that energy is directed precisely to the desired areas of the cell without increasing interference.

Also, the “3dB Pattern Discrepancy” serves as a good indicator of expected MIMO performance. Lower values signify better MIMO gain.
